Prelims 2018 · Geography · Question 27
Consider the following statements:
1. In India, State Governments do not have the power to auction non-coal mines.
2. Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand do not have gold mines.
3. Rajasthan has iron ore mines.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Answer
3 only
1. Incorrect. Under the MMDR Act and post-2015 reforms, State Governments do conduct auctions for grant of mineral concessions for major minerals other than coal as per the central legal framework. So it is wrong to say they do not have the power to auction non-coal mines.
2. Incorrect. Andhra Pradesh has gold deposits/mines (notably in the Ramagiri belt, Anantapur region). Jharkhand is not generally known for major gold mining, but since Andhra Pradesh does have gold mines, the statement is false.
3. Correct. Rajasthan has iron ore deposits/mines, especially in districts such as Jaipur, Jhunjhunu and Udaipur belts. Hence this statement is correct.
Therefore, only statement 3 is correct.
