Prelims 2013 · Economy · Question 28
To obtain full benefits of demographic dividend, what should India do?
Answer
Promoting skill development
- (a) Promoting skill development — Correct. Demographic dividend yields benefits only when the working-age population is employable; skill development raises productivity and employment.
- (b) Introducing more social security schemes — Not the best answer. Social security is welfare-supportive, but it does not by itself convert a large young population into an economic asset.
- (c) Reducing infant mortality rate — Not the core requirement here. It improves health outcomes, but demographic dividend mainly depends on productive employment of the working-age population.
- (d) Privatization of higher education — Incorrect. Privatization is neither necessary nor sufficient for realizing demographic dividend; access, quality, and skills matter more.
Therefore, the correct answer is (a) Promoting skill development.
