Prelims 2016 · Science and Technology · Question 12
With reference to 'Astrosat', the astronomical observatory launched by India, which of the following statements is/are correct?
1. Other than USA and Russia, India is the only country to have launched a similar observatory into space.
2. Astrosat is a 2000 kg satellite placed in an orbit at 1650 km above the surface of the Earth.

Select the correct answer using the code given below.
Answer
Neither 1 nor 2
1. Incorrect. India was not the only country other than the USA and Russia to launch a similar space observatory; countries/space agencies such as Japan and the European Space Agency had already launched astronomical observatories. So the exclusivity claim is wrong.
2. Incorrect. Astrosat had a mass of about 1513–1515 kg and was placed in a ~650 km orbit, not a 2000 kg satellite at 1650 km altitude.
Therefore, neither statement 1 nor statement 2 is correct.
